The main difference is the source of the precursor cell. These cells are differentiated in vitro from monocytes isolated from peripheral blood (PBMCs), whereas BMDMs are differentiated from bone marrow precursors. They are both M0 macrophages but may have subtle functional differences, making them two distinct models.
This model is an excellent representation of circulating monocytes that are recruited to a site of inflammation and then differentiate into macrophages. This makes them a more relevant model for studying acute inflammatory processes or diseases where monocyte recruitment is a key factor.
The BALB/c strain is Th2-biased. You should choose these cells if your research is focused on Th2-driven diseases, such as allergy, asthma, or parasitic infections, and you want to model the role of blood-recruited monocytes in that context.
